Admissions and Aid

Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism is a new department with approximately 250 students and quickly growing. We provide an inclusive, hands-on learning environment in which our students engage in integrated teaching, research, and high-impact programs to create skillful thought leaders in the field. Our students receive world-class education that they can apply to a diverse array of career fields after graduation. Through innovative classroom and field learning experiences, our faculty provide advanced educational opportunities to prepare students for careers in the science and stewardship of biological diversity, ecosystems and their services, and the biosphere. HMGT graduates are critical thinkers set up to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market.

Academic Advising

When Am I Eligible to Change My Major? 

I am an Incoming Freshman

Incoming/First Term Students can change their major: 

  • Prior to confirming admission to the University
  • At check-in of your New Student Conference
  • 10 days prior to the start of the semester through day five (add/drop deadline)
  • Changes after census (12th class day) will be effective the following semester.

I am a Continuing Student

Continuing Students can change their major after completing one term of full admission and full-time enrollment:

  • Review change of major requirements set forth by prospective major.
  • Meet with an advisor in the intended major or college 
  • Submit an application by the appropriate deadline 

Application Deadlines 

Eligible students will be allowed to initiate a change of curriculum request starting ten business days after final grades post and ending on the 20th day of the semester.

Student must be notified of a decision regarding their change of curriculum request on or before ten business days after posting of final grades.

The curriculum change will be effective for the next academic term (per Texas A&M University Student Rule 5 Change of Curriculum). 

The TAMU Academic Calendar states the deadline date. 

Transfer Admissions 

Admission from other institutions is granted on a competitive basis. Students must meet the minimum general requirements set by the University to be considered for departmental admission.  The University requirements for transfer can be found on the Office of Admissions website. Grade point ratio, course history, reasons for requesting the Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism major, and other indicators are reviewed. Changes in departmental capacity may influence acceptance criteria.

Required Coursework For Admission

  • The six (6) credits of math, listed above, must be completed before applications will be considered. MATH 2413 and MATH 2414 are accepted in lieu of MATH 1324 and MATH 1325. 
  • Repeated courses will also be used in the GPA calculation. Example: If an applicant makes an F in ENGL 1301, then repeats ENGL 1301 and makes an A, the A and the F both will be used in the GPA calculation.
  • A grade of ‘D’ is considered passing; however, a grade of ‘D’ negatively impacts the GPA.
  • Review the course equivalency at your school.
  • Spring applicants must have math complete by the time of application. 
  • Summer/Fall applicants must have math complete by May (but must apply by the deadlines).

  • All TAMU employees who become aware of discrimination, harassment (including sexual violence) and/or retaliation must report it regardless of how they become aware of the information.

Are you Putting RPTS as your 2nd Choice Major? 

  • We do look at second choice majors, but you must submit an essay directly to RPTS. 
  • Write a separate essay answering the questions under “Essay Help.” Send a PDF copy of the essay to melyssa.stricklin@tamu.edu. The essay must include your UIN and name in the header. This essay must be emailed the same day that you submitted your Apply Texas application.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Students at Texas A&M get a world-class education at a reasonable cost—and graduate with far less college-related debt than their peers at other universities. We award over $200,000 in scholarships annually to undergraduate students in the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism and support graduate students through scholarships, assistantships, fellowships, and travel and research grants. This funding is made possible by donors and supporters of the department including former students, family and friends, former faculty and industry sponsors.

Graduate Student Funding Opportunities

We understand that graduate education is an investment and one we don’t take lightly. HMGT and Texas A&M University offer competitive assistantships and fellowships to help alleviate the cost of higher education and make attending graduate school more affordable. Approximately 95% of current full-time, on-campus graduate students in HMGT are supported by departmental teaching assistantships, grant-based research assistantships, or internal and external graduate fellowships and grants, amounting to over $200,000 per year. Research and travel grants are also available from the department and university. Check with the Graduate and Professional School for details on opportunities available across the university.

Graduate Fellowships and Assistantships

The Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism offers graduate fellowships and teaching and research assistantships. These are available on a competitive basis to qualified individuals. HMGT invites nominations for graduate assistantships and fellowships available to qualified incoming graduate students matriculating each fall semester funds are available. Outstanding prospective doctoral students are given priority for awards. However, exceptional prospective master’s students (thesis-based) are also considered, where applicable. A call for prospective student nominations for available fellowships will be sent to faculty each fall for the following academic year.
